Design Concept and Association with "Power"

"Power"

The idea of "power" is explored through the notion that both individuals are at present equally as powerful as they are both highly influential people. The two's buildings have been positioned on the one side of the valley to show that there influence is "one-way" (they influence others, they are not being influenced by others.)

John Ive's buiilding (silver) is seen to be submerging out of the landscape as if it were growing, and thus become increasingly more powerful (influential), whereas Oprahs building (brown) has been made to be sinking within the landscape, commenting that her power is coming to an end.

There relationship with eachother is therefore a "bridge" between the future and past influences.

Design

The design of each building aims to reflect and relate to the status of each client. John Ive's building is cased within a simple yet strong and modern skin. This is related to his designs with apple - the skin of mac computers, iphones, ipods etc. are all simple, elegant and modern and are essentially a "case" for the complexities within. The "casing" of his building provides a "big-brother" notion to his character as he is highly influential, yet unrecognisable to many that are influenced by him.

Oprah's offices are inspired by victorian buildings that, although display power and boldness, are becoming increasingly outdated. The idea that Oprah's building is not "cased" like Ive's demonstrates that her influence is much more recognizable.

The bridge that spans over the valley and urban life below reflects there connection and ability to work together in balancing future influences with past.

The power of each client has also been explored through the entry points and ease of entry to each clients building and office.

Ives building contains a personal back door entrance which is immediately directed to a personal elevator that leads straight into his office, as well as the bridge. This design idea was created to portray Ive's mystical identity within his power - seen as a "big brother" figure.

Oprahs entrance to her building is via the front door along with her associates. Furthermore, her elevator takes her to the bridge level of her building, however, she must walk up the spiral staircase in order to get to her office. This design idea demonstrates a slight decrease in power to Ives, however, it does demonstrate her influence as being more identifiable and personal.

Real Time Captures of Crysis Environment

This capture shows the dining table for John Ives and Oprah Winfrey within their meeting place. The tables were created originally as a manipulation of each clients first letter of the thier last name. The two letters combined form a strong, bold and powerful dining table, portraying the clients own personal stature.

The elevators within the bridge consist of a series of different scaled shapes (circle for Ives and squares for Oprah). These where aimed at displaying a sense of balance between the two clients whilst creating an innovative and aesthetically pleasing design. The transparancy of the elevators provides a further sense of power as the clients overlook their empires and the village below.

The elevators in action. As can be seen in the image, the elevators rise and decline following a smooth curved path and enter/exit the meeting place through an opening in the glass roof.

As discussed in my design explanation previously, the buildings have been position on the same side of the valley. Although at this current time both clients are seen as equally as powerful, Oprah's building (victorian, old fashioned) has been made to look as though it is sinking within the landscape, commenting that her power is declining, whereas Ive's building (modern, sheak) is seen to be ascending from the landscape to portray his constant rise in power and influence.

Peer Assessment

This student assessment was held during the third week of Assignment 3. At this time I was not up to date with all of the weekly tasks as can be seen in the requirement boxes.

Two Point Perspectives - Original and Inverted

My Chosen Landscape and Draft Landscape Environments

I have chosen to locate Ive's and Oprah's offices and bridge in Silicon Valley, California. Silicon Valley is where the current Apple Headquarters is located and is know to be the home of some of the largest and most "powerful" businesses in America.

Geographically, the Silicon Valley encompasses all of the Santa Clara Valley including the city of San Jose.

These images show the development of my landscape in Crysis Sandbox. Unfortunately I could not seem to work out how to display all of the details within the environment whilst zoomed out, however, I think these images are clear in portraying my idea.

Initial Plans for Assignment 3 - WHAT DO YOU THINK?

My Idea for Assignment 3

The images below are my first (and hopefully last) models for my assignment 3 "bridge". The buildings will be placed within an urban valley and remain on the same side as eachother! The silver building is obviously John Ive's offices whilst the brown building is for Oprah.

"Power"

The idea of "power" is explored through the notion that both individuals are at present equally as powerful as they are both highly influential people. The reason there buildings are on the same side is to show that there influence is "one-way" (they influence others, they are not being influenced by others.)

However, John Ive's buiilding (modern) will seem to be submerging out of the landscape as if it were growing, and thus become increasingly more powerful (influential), whereas Oprahs building (aged, victorian) will seem to be almost sinking within the landscape, commenting that her power is coming to an end.

There relationship with eachother is therefore a "bridge" between the future and past influences.

As you can see, Ive's entry from the bridge is at the top of the building (straight into his office) whereas Oprah's entry point is in the middle of her building, further commenting on the notion of power.

Images of Crysis Model

My chosen electroliquid aggregation: Newton and Agnesi: The creation of complicated forms through the amalgamation of simple elements helps to demonstrate how light, and its opposite, dark, are equal.'

Below are my images from my crysis wars environment which demonstrate my rectalinear meeting place for my two clients, Newton and Agnesi. The images include the application of my 3 textures and aim to demonstrate the proportion/size of the building in comparison to a human.

The blue and red lights that lead along each side of the ground plane aim to reflect my electroliquid aggregation as it shows the notion that light and dark are equal, in the form of opposing colours. The lights have also been implemented to represent each clients space as there is no formal boundaries between each clients area.

This image shows a detail of a warf that I created as an entry point onto the island. From this warf, the clients follow the textured path which divides at the top of the hill into the two separate entry points for each client.

This image was taken to demonstrate the scale of the environment and positional layout of the elements.

The entrance point for each client has been identified through the different coloured light.

The building in itself reflects the hypothesis that complex structures are created through simple forms as is seen by the ability to create a functional and defined spatial layout through the amalgamation of 10 rectangular prisms.

The environment therefore clearly demonstrates and supports my electroliquid aggregation as through the amalgamation of the 10 simple forms one can effectively demonstrate the equality of light and dark, as shown through the introduction of opposing but equal light fixtures.

Combined Axo's - 'Electroliquid Aggregation'

Electroliquid Aggregation: 'The creation of complicated forms through the amalgamation of simple elements helps to demonstrate how light, and its opposite, dark, are equal.'

Electroliquid Aggregation: 'By solving a structural problem through collaboration, over time ones perception of that structure can change.'
Electroliquid Aggregation: 'A myriad of dependable materials create a more dynamic structure and space.'
